On June 27 at 0436 units from Washingtonville were dispatched to a structure fire at Planet Wings on East Main Street in the center of the village of Washingtonville. This building provides many challenges for firefighters such as multiple void spaces and alterations done over the 100+ years. The layout is also odd in that there is an attached building on #3 side of the building which also has commercial on the first floor and apartments above.
Car 2 (Hearn) and Car 3 (Bates) arrived to find smoke showing from the first floor of the 2 story tax payer. E-580 forced entry and stretched a line into the restaurant. At this time a 2nd alarm was transmitted. The crew found fire involving the rear wall of the kitchen and supplies on the rack storage. The fire was quickly knocked down and units began to check for extension. Some extension was found in exposure 3 and was quickly knocked down. A short time later 579 roof gave an urgent message that conditions on roof had quickly deteriorated and there was heavy smoke and fire from the roof. Command requested a 3rd alarm due to the multiple areas of this building which were now involved.
Units stretched lines into the apartment above the restaurant as well the apartment on the #2 side and #3 side. Units found a large body of fire running the walls and ceilings in the exposure #3 apartment. Units working in the main fire building also found extension in the rear walls.
All searches were negative and there were no injuries to civilians or members. Units returned to service in approximately 4 hours.
